WELCOME TO THE ESA 2022 CONGRESS WEBPAGE

28th Meeting of the ESA
Lisbon, Portugal
Date: 20 -21 May 2022

It is a pleasure and an honor for us to host the 28th Congress of the European Surgical Association in the city of Lisbon, on the 20th and 21st  May 2022. Lisbon hosted the ESA Congress for the first time in 2002 when our esteemed colleague the late Professor Mendes de Almeida was host. Twenty years have passed, and Lisbon has undergone many important transformations since that time. We are grateful to ESA for choosing our city to receive this unique event once again.

With more than 20 centuries of history, the edification of Lisbon has its origins in the Phoenicians, having been subsequently conquered by the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and later by the Muslim Empire. It was reconquered in 1147 and declared Capital of Portugal in 1385. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Lisbon became one of the most important ports in the world, being the base of the maritime expansion of the Kingdom of Portugal. Lisbon is a city of multiple cultural influences, rich in monuments, and a gastronomy strongly influenced by the proximity of the sea.

The venue of the Congress, the “Centro Cultural de Belém”, is located next to the Tagus River. It was built initially to accommodate the programme of Portugal's Presidency of the European Council in 1992. It is located at the “Square of the Empire” in close proximity with two UNESCO World Heritage monuments: the “Tower of Belém”, built in 1514, which commemorated the expedition of Vasco da Gama and also served to defend the port of Lisbon;  and the “Monastery of the Jerónimos”, donated to the monks of Saint Hieronymus so that they would pay spiritual assistance to seafarers that left the shores of Lisbon in quest for the new world.

The two main hotel accommodations the “Altis Belém” and the “Palácio do Governador” are within walking distance of the venue.

The welcome reception will take place in a garden at Centro Cultural de Belém, on Friday, 20th May, and will include music with a Fado singer.

We will close the congress with the Gala Dinner, “black tie” as usual. The location will be the “Grémio Literário”, and institution founded in 1846 by a prestigious group of writers, politicians, and aristocrats of the Portuguese liberal world, to be the elegant center of the intellectual Lisbon society. It is in the Loures Palace, a characteristic building of local romantic architecture, in the Chiado quarter, in the heart of Lisbon. The dinner will include wine tasting and comments by a famous Portuguese enologist.

The scientific program will cover many areas of surgery and brings some of the most recent advances in our field. The congress will be an opportunity to share knowledge and discuss the most important issues in surgery today.

The organizing committee will be at your disposal during the congress. We wish you a pleasant and productive stay in one of the most prestigious events in the field of Surgery in Europe.

GRÉMIO LITERÁRIO

THE GRÉMIO LITERÁRIO was created in 1846 by royal charter of Queen D. Maria II, thus giving her support to the initiative of a prestigious group of writers, politicians and aristocrats of the Portuguese liberal world.

In 2018, Grémio Literário has been acknowledged by the Municipality of Lisbon, as being an Institution of local Cultural and Historic Interest.

The Centro Cultural de Belem is located in the west of Lisbon, overlooking the Tagus river and harmoniously into its architectural surroundings, dominated by the splendid Jerónimos Monastery, and with the Belém Tower just a stone’s throw away, the Centro Cultural de Belém is a historical meeting point in Lisbon, designed to be just a small part of the city both in terms of its geography and in its relationship with the river.
