July, 14th, 2023

A Surgeon, a Friend and a Rock Star.

It is with great sadness that ESA President, Laurence Chiche, on behalf of the Council, announce to our members the death few hours ago of our esteemed member Prof CLAUDIO BASSI.

Claudio has been for many years a well internationally recognized academic surgeon and good friend for many of us, regardless of nationality or surgical discipline.

Prof. Claudio Bassi graduated in Medicine at the University of Padua in 1977. After his postgraduate training and many fellowships spent in several prestigious international pancreas surgical centers, he became Professor of Surgery at the University of Verona (Italy) and Director of the Pancreas Institute of the “G.B. Rossi” University Hospital in Verona Italy.

He spent most of his professional career devoting himself to the surgery of the pancreas and in developing advanced treatment for patients affected by pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis. Due to his scientific orientation and surgical expertise he has been recognized one of the most expert surgeon in the treatment of pancreatic disease. Due to his untiring publication activity he has been recognized as one of the top Italian Scientist and became member of many international societies like ESA, ASA, IHPBA, American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons, the French Surgical Society and the German Surgical Society just to name the few. He has been also President of the E-A HPBA and Vice President of the Italian Surgical Society.

Due to his recognized knowledge, he was always surrounded by many young surgeons to whom he passionately transferred his knowledge and many of them have followed his path and success. Claudio always based his professional career on the three pillars of academia: Research, Care for the Patients and Education.

He was not only a surgeon, but he liked to enjoy the day to day life. He liked to gather with his friends from all over the world, he was actively involved in the politics of his loved city Verona, he was a passionate fan of his beloved soccer team “Chievo” and finally he was a great guitarist. He loved playing music and his musical skills where just equal to the high standard of his surgical skills.

He leaves behind his beloved family, the wife Teresa and the three children Michela, Andrea and Daniele to whom we send our deepest condolences.

Ciao Claudio
