Henri Bismuth ESA Career Award

ESA proudly congratulates Prof. Dr. Pierre-Alain Clavien, MD PhD, recipient of the Henri Bismuth ESA Career Award, in recognition of his exceptional career and lasting impact on surgery.

The award was presented to Pierre-Alain Clavien during the ESA Annual Meeting in Rome by Henri Bismuth, Founding Father of ESA; Peter Lodge, ESA President; Nicolò de Manzini, Chair of the Nomination Committee; and Antonio Pinna, host of the Meeting.

Prof. Dr. P.A. Clavien has made exceptional and enduring contributions to surgery through groundbreaking innovation, visionary leadership, and global influence on surgical practice.

He is a pioneer in hepato-biliary and transplant surgery, seamlessly integrating fundamental discovery with clinical applications. His research elucidated critical mechanisms of liver regeneration and made surgical strategies safer. He was a catalyst in the development of ex-vivo hypothermic and normothermic liver perfusion, enabling prolonged preservation and functional recovery of liver allografts.

As chair of the Dept. of Surgery at the University of Zurich Hospital for over two decades, Prof. Clavien built one of Europe's premier academic surgical programs, fostering excellence in complex surgery, translational research and education. His mentorship has shaped generations of surgeon scientists who now occupy leadership roles worldwide.
